Ozone is a powerful oxidizer — that's what makes it effective at eliminating odors. At the concentrations produced during treatment, it should not be inhaled directly. This is why all Enerzen ozone generators are designed for use in unoccupied spaces only. After treatment, residual ozone naturally converts back to ordinary oxygen within 30 minutes. The room is safe once the ozone smell has dissipated.

Pets must be removed from the treatment area before use, just like people. Birds are particularly sensitive to air quality changes and should be moved well away from any area being treated. After the 30-minute clearance period, the space is safe for pets to re-enter.

California's Air Resources Board has specific certification requirements for ozone-generating devices that differ from federal EPA standards. Yes — for odors where the source has been removed or addressed. Ozone breaks down the chemical compounds that cause odors at the molecular level. The smell does not return once the source is gone. Treatment time depends on room size and odor severity. As a general guide: small rooms (bedrooms, bathrooms) require 30–45 minutes; medium rooms (living areas, kitchens) 45–90 minutes; large spaces 90–180 minutes; vehicle interiors 15–30 minutes. Severe or long-standing odors may require multiple treatment cycles.

Ozone is effective against virtually all organic odor compounds — smoke, pet, mold, food, and body odors. It is less effective against purely inorganic sources. In practice, for large open areas, positioning the unit centrally and running longer treatment cycles maximizes coverage.
